TECH DICTIONARY
Most common words used by Media Softlab Support Staff when something goes wrong and you can't understand what are we talking about. In order to get used to expressions or IT jargon we will try to explain the meaning of some. For others not mentioned here use online tech dictionary or search engines.

TCP/IP - The Internet protocol suite is the set of communications protocols that implements the protocol stack on which the Internet and many commercial networks run. It is part of the TCP/IP protocol suite, which is named after two of the most important protocols in it: the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the Internet Protocol (IP), which were also the first two networking protocols defined.

POP3 - In computing, local e-mail clients use the Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3), an application-layer Internet standard protocol, to retrieve e-mail from a remote server over a TCP/IP connection.

ISP - Internet Service Provider

SMTP - Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is the de facto standard for e-mail transmissions across the Internet.

PHP - PHP is a powerful server-side scripting language for creating dynamic and interactive websites. PHP is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML.

NDR - Non-Delivery Reports (email bounces)

BACKSCATTER - Backscatter is the flood of messages received when an email address is forged as the sender on spam messages. Backscatter is caused by people who don't reject mail during delivery, but instead accept the mail and then later send back a bounce message..

IMP - IMP is the Internet Messaging Program. It is written in PHP and provides webmail access to IMAP and POP3 accounts.

IMAP - IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. It is a method of accessing electronic mail or bulletin board messages that are kept on a (possibly shared) mail server. In other words, it permits a "client" email program to access remote message stores as if they were local. For example, email stored on an IMAP server can be manipulated from a desktop computer at home, a workstation at the office, and a notebook computer while traveling, without the need to transfer messages or files back and forth between these computers.

QMAIL - Qmail is a mail transfer agent that runs on Unix servers.

WEBMAIL - The terms Web-based email (or Web-based e-mail) and Webmail refer to the implementation of an e-mail client as a Web application that allows users to access their e-mail through a Web browser, as an alternative to using a desktop-based client such as Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird or Eudora.
